New Years Amber Light Show

January first of this year was an exceptionally clear night as I admired the view over the Strait. Then, what seemed only a few miles away I saw what looked like fire works launching. But this was unusually large for such a distance if sent off from land. Could not have been more than five miles away. I waited for the bang and the "oooh.."  "aahh" etc, but no. Instead, after what appeared to be a change in shape of the object from rectangelish at launch to circular when stationary, It just stopped and hovered for about thirty seconds. Then three others just lit up from a stationary position not appearing to be launched as the first. They were very bright with the color of amber. They started off in more or less a straight line and moved very slowly to create a triangle in the sky. Two moved together to form one and stayed as one for the whole event which lasted two or three minutes until they all faded from view. They did not appear to just "drift" with the breeze which was very light if any. They all moved in many directions, not all in one direction. I thought this was rather peculiar behavior even if they were just balloons as they did not move in the normally excepted way. A few were very still while one slowly moved to make a different type of triangle in the sky.
I ran to get my camera but they were quite difficult to focus on so I only took three pictures not thinking I would get anything.

I told two friends about it and to my surprise, each one had read the local paper about a couple that saw something very similar on our local news respectively a few days earlier. So I checked my shots to see what came out. I have no idea what this is other than what it appears to be; a self luminous ball with a honeycomb-like structure. The shutter speed on the camera was 1/15 of a second. Contrast and color enhance reveal more details than the original colors seen here.

I once read a book that correlated places of high tectonic stress to unusual phenomenon. There was a direct correlation. These may be some form of electrically charged plasma events emitted from the earth when a certain amount or piezoelectric charge builds up due to pressure on the tectonic faults in
the area. I really don't know. It could be some form of life with technology far superior to our own.

...was certainly interesting to watch.

The three original pics are here.
